Artist books

I’ve been working with book media since I started art school in 2009. At that point I had never heard of artist books but I kept gravitating to the codex as a vehicle or platform for various projects. I gradually began to understand books as art objects in their own right, though I am still willing to leverage the portability and accessibility of books to simply convey a message.

I am also influenced by comics and graphic novels, and am interested in creating graphic narratives (particularly memoir) that achieve an effective and affective interplay of image and text outside traditional modes of comics, drawing and illustration. I use photographic derivatives, found art, removal/redaction and book construction to tell stories.

I’ve made chapbooks, zines, pop-ups, wooden codex structures, case binding, coptic binding, accordions, flipbooks, photo album reconstructions and containers. In these explorations I’ve been able to develop my interests in creative writing and storytelling, illustration, anthology and collaboration, 3D media, and of course photography. I’ve been fortunate to be mentored by print media and publication artist Aimée Henny Brown through a 2020 BC Arts Council Early Career Development grant with a major focus on book and publishing theory.
